Im a food blogger now

Im a food blogger now alternate subtitle: how I learned to stop worrying and throw some food in a pan Almost exactly twelve months ago, I had never cooked a full meal in my life, if you dont count boiling a hot dog, pouring myself a glass of water, and taking ready-to-eat baby carrots out of the fridge. Learning to cook was the one thing I hadnt crossed off all of those get your child ready for college! lists; when I read those lists out loud to my parents, theyd say I think weve done a pretty good job! Well, except for Except for the cooking. Cue shrug from me. At just about same time, June/July 2018, I and the rest of the Class of 2022 were submitting our dorm ranking choices, agonizing over the wait for results, and frantically refreshing the myhousing.mit.edu page to find out where we had been assigned. My parents (who met at a university with a mandatory 20-meal/wk. dining plan) thought it was crazy that I was considering living in a dorm with kitchens instead of a dining hall, and a 10+ minute walk from any other dining hall to boot. This is OUR Shuli? The one who doesnt even eat fruit if we dont cut it up first? 01 This is a true story about senior-year me. Of now-me, I will say only that necessity (read not getting scurvy) is the mother of invention (read getting off my ass). My line at the time was, I dont mind a walk to the dining hall! It might be nice to be able to cook myself dinner sometimes! I can just get on a medium-sized meal plan and see what works best for me! Flash forward like two months. Its October of freshman year, I have already downgraded from medium-medium meal plan to small-medium meal plan, going to the dining hall is starting to seem like an increasingly unnecessary chore, and you know what? It turns out I like cooking my own food, and Im pretty good at it, actually. Hey, whats that noise? Its so quiet, I can barely hear it Oh, I know! Its my entire family dying of shock. To be honest, I was pretty surprised, too, but when I look back it totally makes sense. Im not the worst picky eater, but I have a few favourite dishes I really like, and Id happily eat those all the time. When I eat with my family, of course, the meal depends on all of our wants and needs. But when Im on my own, why would I go to the dining hall and have to make my choice out of those options, usually only ending up with something I like okay,02 or a few sad times, something I dont even like at all when I could cook exactly what I wanted to eat? Dudes: its revelatory. I cook when Im hungry, and I cook whatever it is I want to eat at that exact moment. And I love  it. In preparation for another wonderful year of cooking and eating delightful hit-the-spot dishes, I wanted to shore up my skills a bit this summer. During the year, its hard to try new things, because its such an investment: it takes me much longer to make something Ive never tried before, I make more of a mess and then have to clean it up, and even just buying all the ingredients can require an extra grocery store trip,03 there is nothing I hate more than standing in the store and realizing Im not quite sure if I need /this/ spice or /that/ spice, and I have no clue where to find the cans of whatever, all while my basket grows heavy in my hands and my psets await me at home... no mean feat in MITs food-deserty location. But during the summer, I have access to a car, and a well-stocked kitchen,04 no offense to putz kitchen. it contains many wonderful things, but absolutely zero lids that actually match a pot. and two people I can coerce into helping me! Its the perfect time to perfect some recipes, so that when fall comes, I can shop and cook with skill and ease. Here are some delicious things my parents and I have cooked this summer! I have linked a recipe for each one. Overnight Oats These seem to be getting really popular lately? I feel like youve either heard wayyyy too much about these already, or youve never heard of them at all. In any case, overnight oats are (IMHO) a better and easier version of oatmeal. You take some dry oats, dump a bunch of milk on them, and maybe put some honey or vanilla in the milk. Then you refrigerate overnight, microwave in the morning, and presto! A filling05 like, rEALLY filling, if your previous breakfast experience includes things like an applesauce cup or two small slices of bread breakfast with approximately 3 minutes of total effort. If youre real bougie, try adding some coconut milk,06 we bought a big can and froze ice cubes of it to use one by one toasted almonds, blueberries, or maple syrup.07 only REAL CANADIAN MAPLE SYRUP THOUGH, none of you Americans terrible fake corn syrup. that stuff is a pale comparison at best, like a human next to a greek god in their true form. if you have only had fake maple syrup then you know nothing, less than nothing, you know NEGATIVE about maple syrup. sorry ! At risk of sounding like an infomercial, every time I eat it, Im surprised that something so easy could taste so good!! Spinach-and-tomato dal When I had a ton of classes in Stata spring semester, I got really into the Stata cafeterias dal (the only good dairy-free food they have, tbh, and its such a good source of protein!). But it was ridiculous to be paying $10 a day for a bunch of lentils, and ridiculous how sad I felt whenever I showed up and it wasnt on the menu. So, this summer Ive been trying out some dal recipes so that I know what spices I want to buy when I get back. Im hoping to cook and freeze some huge batches, and then always have super-fast, vegetarian08 Im not a vegan, but it seems like becoming more of one can only be a good thing for me, other creatures, and the earth. lunch that makes me happy! This spinach dal is my favourite because it only has a couple spices (perfect for someone who only has one cabinet, such as myself) and it comes built-in with vegetables. Add rice and its literally a whole meal, which is ideal. I definitely add more spinach, and a LOT more tomato, than the recipe the burst of flavour from the tomatoes is the best part ?? Marinara sauce I saw this NYT recipe for making marinara sauce from scratch and after I read the comments (a thousand variations on this recipe is perfect just the way it is and you should not change a single thing or ever make anything else), I realllllllly wanted to try it. The main ingredient is San Marzano tomatoes, certified D.O.P if possible, and the crowd in the comments section was adamant that nothing but San Marzano would do. I emailed the link to my mom and said, hey, do you think Loblaws09 local generic grocery store chain; think star market would carry these specific fancy tomatoes? She said, lets go to Pusateris. Pusateris, you ask? Think Whole Foods, but even more so.  How much more so? When we walked in the door and looked into the store, the San Marzano certified D.O.P. tomatoes were  the first thing we saw. Like magic. ? I squished these whole, canned tomatoes into oblivion (and had tomatoes under my nails for days), and then we threw them in a pan. And that was pretty much it! This sauce was easy and delicious and yes, I could tell the difference from store-bought. (Im sure the fresh basil from my moms tiny pot in front of the garage didnt hurt, either.) I will definitely make it again, although I wouuuuld recommend maybe a tiny pinch of sugar or baking soda to cut the acidity just a bit. Dont tell the commenters I said so ?? Blueberry basil ginger lemonade So, I guess I can stop right here, because Ive literally just told you every ingredient in this drink. But I wont, because if I did you would miss out on hearing about the amazing second food contained within this food!! The instructions say: simmer blueberries in sugar water; blend with basil and ginger; strain and discard solids. But this is a dirty trick! The so-called solids are in reality  jam. Sugary, well-pureed blueberries with a hint of ginger and basil? Why throw it away? Honestly, the lemonade is great (especially with a bit of seltzer/club soda), but the jam is the bigger win, as long as youve got good bread to put it on. The way the strong, familiar blueberry taste is balanced out by the other flavours (which are a bit lost in the drink version) is something that I dont think you can find in many commercial products. Dessert Summer Rolls Sorry, no recipe here! These came out of my own head. For several years, Ive loved traditional summer rolls (a.k.a. cold rolls), which are like spring rolls, but wrapped in translucent rice paper rather than fried dough. The versatility of the dish (I mean, you can wrap anything you want in rice paper as long as it fits) made me wonder about what a dessert version of it would be like. Instead of noodles, maybe the base could be sweet coconut sticky rice (my family uses this recipe, approximately). The proteins and veggies could be swapped out for fruit: mango as a base, since that fits with the rice, and then? I wasnt sure what the last ingredient should be for a long time. When we finally bought materials last weekend, we picked up nectarines and apples (and were also considering cucumbers). But I can report quite surely that the apples were the way to go: the crunch they bring is honestly the most important part of all. We saved extra sweetened coconut milk and used it for a dipping sauce. It was amazing!! Its often said that nothing tastes better than food you cooked yourself. But I want to add something to that: nothing tastes better than food you designed, shopped for, tinkered with, and cooked yourself. Cooking is a magic on par with engineering, for me. Its a place where you can begin by setting aside any need for rules and logic, and instead thinking,  what would happen if I added this? Or just threw in some of that? If I put a giant wheel on the top? And once your idea has come to beautiful fruition, you can perfect it; bring back the math and the numbers, tweak things this way and that way, until it all comes out just right. And not anyones just right, but yours: the just right you envisioned from the start. And when it hits your tongue, it tastes soooooo good. ??? some food pics  I have that  I like, but that didnt make the cut (mostly because I didnt make them): poke, cherries,  kompot   Post Tagged #cook-for-yourself communities #Cooking This is a true story about senior-year me. Fahrenheit 451 - Power of Books - 1470 Words

THE POWER OF BOOKS ESSAY Guy Montag’s â€Å"crime against society†, was that he understood the power of books. Fahrenheit 451 (1953), written by Ray Bradbury depicts a dystopian society which, due to the absence of books, discourages intellect and punishes free-will. As receptacles of knowledge, books give human beings a unique power, as they encourage and nurture intellect and understanding. The intellectual metamorphosis that Montag undergoes renders him aware of this fact, making him an incredibly dangerous figure in the society of Fahrenheit 451. Despite Montag’s understanding of the power of books, he only recognises his true purpose in life once all elements from his former society had been destroyed. The power of books†¦show more content†¦Therefore, through books, Montag becomes conscious of the monotony of his previous life, and now rebels against the very foundations of his society. Due to this intellectual illumination, Montag begins to acknowledge the details of the world around him, details he had once ignored: ‘†Bet I know something else you don ’t. There’s dew on the grass this morning.†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢As enlightenment dawns on Montag, he finally begins to realise the power within books (i.e. they hold the key to power through knowledge) and this is his ‘crime’ against society: ‘There must be something in books, things we cant imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house...’ Despite his newfound interest, Montag is still struggling to understand the concept of literature. Once again however, Montag is pushed in the right direction by Professor Faber. Under Faber’s guidance, Montag recognises that ‘There is nothing magical about [books] at all. The magic is only with what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment.’ This quote exemplifies the fact that although books are the combination of mere ink and paper, it is the beliefs and the knowledge within a book that are so incredibly powerful. In a conformist society however, Montag still has no outlet for his intellect, and thus finds himself without a purpose: ‘I am lost without it.’ This quoteShow MoreRelatedThe Wave And Fahrenheit 451972 Words   |  4 PagesPower can be a hazardous undertaking. Application of Law to the Facts: In light of all the facts based upon the law relating to nondisclosure agreements (NDA’s), a court most likely would rule in favor of Greenes Jewelry. This ruling comes from the matters of breaking legal contracts. NDA’s are legal binding contracts. Ms. Jennifer Lawson breached the confidentiality agreement/contract, that she was required to sign upon working for Greenes, when she took secret information to multiple competing jewelers. Greene’s should attempt to be proactive by letting the public know that Ms. Lawson’s 3 years of outstanding work should not go without notice. Additionally, the plaintiff should plan to publicly announce their unfortunate situation which has caused the need to downsize and eliminate the positions held by all junior executive secretaries. As a showing of good faith it may also be in the company’s best interest to offer severance packages for their displaced former employees to help them along as they move on to the next stage of their careers. Letting the public know that they care and are truly saddened by having to let their employees go will play on sentiment and may help to bring the public to Greene’s side, thus reducing their reputational risk. Health Care Decisions of the Mentally Ill Free Essays

The mentally ill are an extremely vulnerable group when it comes to receiving adequate health care as well as being â€Å"allowed† to make those critical decisions that affect their lives. Although the perception exists that as a whole the mentally ill are ill equipped if not downright incapable of making those decisions, the reality is not so carved in stone.   The stereotypes of the mentally ill both lessen their ability to â€Å"participate in the management of their illness and achieve desired treatment outcomes,† and â€Å"encourages pessimistic and non-therapeutic attitudes and behaviors among clinicians making them receptive to the requests of their mentally ill patients. We will write a custom essay sample on Health Care Decisions of the Mentally Ill or any similar topic only for you Order Now † (National 2006 p. 80). The perception is that the mentally ill pose a danger to both themselves and society, therefore need to have all â€Å"important† decisions made for them, just as a child would. The mentally ill are often coerced into making decisions that are neither true to their wishes, or good for their lives. In reality, the majority of the mentally ill are quite capable of making their own health care decisions, and only rarely does their illness affect those decisions, requiring a family member or friend to step forward. Research has shown that the mental health population has â€Å"elevated rates of some disease and health complications from psychiatric medication,† and, in fact tend to die at significantly younger ages than the general population. (Mental 2006 p. 1).   There are, of course, circumstances where intervention by another party becomes a necessity.   In the more severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or severe bi-polar disease, the ability to make rational decisions can become severely impaired, requiring a guardian ad-litem to make decisions that are in the best interest of the patient. Our current system of HMO’s also put the mentally ill patient at a further disadvantage because â€Å"psychiatric disorders leave people ill-equipped to handle the bureaucratic roadblocks inherent in managed care.† (Perina 2002 p. 1). Because there are no concrete routine blood tests or CAT scans that definitively say that a person is ill, the science is much more subjective, therefore more fraught with stumbling blocks. As stated, in most cases, the mentally ill are still quite able to make their own health care decisions and should be allowed to do so without the stereotypes and hardships to make those decisions more difficult. Business Needs and Standards of Educated Graduates †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Business Needs and Standards of Educated Graduates. Answer: Introduction: The assignment is a literature review to study the needs of the business organisations and the attributes of the higher educated graduates in Australia. The assessment opens with a study of the business needs of the organisations. The second section studies the market of Australia and points out its main industries where the educated graduates can work. The final section studies the attributes of the graduate candidates of Australia and delves into the higher education system of the country. Martin and Adrada-Rafael (2017) in their work state that business organisations IN Australia operate to fulfil their business needs. They state that the apex management in these business organisations set goals and objectives for the business organisations to run successfully and earn profits. Cabrera et al.(2016) defines business needs of organisations as the high degree of performance which need to achieve in order to sustain in the highly competitive market and earn profits. Business needs of organisations can be of various types like gaining high profits, gaining high competitive position it market, obtaining a global consumer base to achieve repeat business, offering the customers high quality products at affordable costs and gaining customer loyalty. Allen Kraakman (2016) state that the two most important business needs of the organisations are earning profits on continuous basis and competitive advantage in the market. He states that the shareholders invest capital; in the business organisations which support all its operations and hence, the foremost needs of the business organisation should be bringing about capital maximisation of the shareholders. Bamiatzi et al(2016) supports Allen and Kraakman and states that business organisations require to earn huge profits in the market to gain competitive advantage. The business organisations in his opinion are required to earn huge profits to sustain in the competitive market. Most of the big business organisations are public limited companies that raise huge capital from the security market. The investors invest huge amount of money in the securities market which form the source of financial strength of all the public limited companies. This strong financial capital base helps the companies to invest huge funds into production of high standard goods and services. They are able to sell their products to a huge consumer base and thus earn huge profit. Again it can be stated from the discussion that high profits allow the multinational business organisations to invest in carrying out innovations aimed at manufacturing more consumer oriented products. These products help the companies to gain a loyal base of consumers who consume their products on regular basis. The business organisations use this loyal consumer base to counteract the threats from new entrants and rival companies. Thus, it can be stated that high profitability contributes towards achieving high competitive strength in the competitive market. Rao (2017) contradicts the previous author and points out that competitive advantage can no more achieved by profitability alone. He pointed out that good corporate governance and gaining stakeholders support can contribute more towards gaining of competitive advantage in the market. Gaining stakeholders support by benefitting them: Oyewunmi et al.(2017) state that stakeholders have the power to impact business organisations and their business outcomes directly and indirectly. They state that stakeholders like customers are capable of directly impacting the profitability of organisations because they are the ones to buy their products and generate revenue for them. The government, the financial institutions, international organisations and apex bodies like the Australian Securities Exchange make laws and policies for the organisations to follow while operating in the market. The suppliers provide raw materials to these organisations while the distributors distribute their gods in the market. The employees operate and execute the business plans while the society encourages them to produce goods to earn profits. The customers, governments and the suppliers have the power to impact the profitability of the organisations and even lead to their failure. According to Rao (2017), it has become crucial for the business organisations to protect stakeholders interests through corporate governance. The business organisations toady incorporate stakeholders interests in their business strategies to attract stakeholders like customers. Thus, this analysis shows that corporate governance and protection of stakeholders interests contribute to earnings of high profits. Cost reduction and sustainability-New business needs in Australian organisations: Christopher, M. (2016) states that the organisations in Australia are under continuous pressures of achieving cost reduction and sustainability which have evolved as two new business needs. The stakeholders like the government s, customers, suppliers and society as which put great emphasis on business organisations to operate in economic manner and attain sustainability. The government of most of the competitive markets like Australia have enacted laws to ensure that business organisations act in ways to reduce cost of operations. He MacGregor(2016) state that companies today aim to reduce their expenditure to and operate more sustainably. The business organisations today prefer to obtain raw materials from sustainable supply chains which provide them with high quality environment friendly raw materials. This reduces their waste emission and allows them to use their inventory more efficiently which helps them to make maximum utilisation of raw materials. The customers today prefers to buy products from producers who use sustainable methods of production. Thus using sustainable means of acquisition of raw materials and production of sustainable goods enable the organisations to sell their goods to a huge consumer base. This generates huge revenue for the business organisations which allow them to spread their expenditure over a huge body of revenue. Tozlu, Azahi and Abu?o?lu (2016) add to Mcgregor and state companies instead of dumping wastes from their production processes prefer using these wastes to produce energy using Waste to Energy(WTE) technology. They produce methane which they can use as fuel in the production processes. It also saves their expenditure towards acquisition of expensive non renewable sources of energy like coal and petrol. Thus companies can thus reduce their energy expenditures by becoming energy efficient. Moreover the multinational companies today can earn extra revenue by selling their surplus energy to smaller firms. This discussio n shows that sustainability helps the companies to reduce their cost of operation and utilise the raw materials more efficiently even in the waste material stage. Henderson(2017) contradicts with Henderson, Golring and Simeon-Dubach and states that installation of WTE plants require huge initial investments in technology and personnel. It can be opined in the light of the above discussion that big public companies have the technological and financial strength to invest huge amount of capital into sustainable and expensive technology. Most of the small firms in Australia are not capable of investing such amount of capital to attain sustainability, energy efficiency and cost reduction. Thus this analysis shows that the relationship between sustainability and cost reduction is not constant. The two business needs are directly proportional for the large business houses but inversely proportional for small firms. A summary of the business needs of organisations: The business organisations on toady have several business needs like maximising profits, gaining and retaining competitive advantage, satisfying stakeholders needs to ensure their long term support and attainment of sustainability. The discussion above shows that profitability and high competitive strength are interlinked where one encourages the other. Similarly sustainability and energy efficiency help the companies to reduce their energy expenditure. However it must be pointed in all the business are interrelated and interdependent. For example, following of sustainable methods of operation creates a strong image of organisations in the markets like Australia. This positive image helps the companies to attract customers and generate high revenue by sell products to them. Again catering to multiple needs of customers earns the companies a loyal base of consumers who give repeated business to the companies. This helps firms to gain competitive advantage in the market which helps the companies gain more market penetration and maximise their profits. This earned profit can be invested towards attainment of further sustainability, energy efficiency and business expansion. Hence it is evident from the discussion that the business needs are interdependent. The business organisations aim to satisfy all these needs to retain their leading market position. Hutchens(2017) states that Australias economy is a very stable economy and is experiencing strong development which has not faced recession. This economy stability has laid to the expansion of the industrial sector which is creating job opportunities (Bourke, 2017). The Australian economy is among the fastest growing economies in the world. The most important industries in the country are mining, business consulting, energy and health and pharmaceutical company. The business needs of the Australian companies are to earn more profits, gain more competitive advantage in the international job market and gain larger consumer bases in the international market. According to Oyewunmi et al(2017) this would require the industries to acquire talented and educated work force having the skills and competencies to perform efficiently to promote towards high performances of the Australian companies. Attributes of the highly educated graduates in Australia: Bamiatzi et al.(2016) states that the companies of Australia would require to acquire talented and highly educated graduate employees having skills and competencies to lead them towards achievement of higher position in the global market. The higher education system in Australia consists of university, autonomous institutions and independent organisations imparting technical education. The country has thirty eight public universities and three private universities. The government of Australia has created a framework to link education at graduate level to the requirements of the corporate sector. The Australian Qualification Framework provides education in doctors, post graduate degree and bachelor degree(The Australian Higher Education System,2017). The Australian educational institutes provided graduate education in several areas like management, engineering, electronics, medical sciences and law. The Australia Bureau of Statistics states that the number of unemployed workforce is f alling while the rate of employed rate is on the rise (abs.gov.au, 2017). An analysis of this discussion shows that graduates of Australia are educated enough to lead the organisations. They have the leadership skills and competencies to ensure high level of performances and career growth. Laurence Karnon (2016) state that the employers today emphasis on ensuring health and safety of their highly skilled and talented workforce. The highly competent graduates who join the organisations after completing their higher education have the skills and competencies which help them to contribute towards high performances of the organisations. Thus it can be inferred from the discussion that the graduates who form a significant part of Australias workforce are highly talented and skilled. The employers provide these skilled graduate employees with training to further enhance their skills. Conclusion: It can be concluded that business organisations have several needs like maximisation of profit, achievement of market competitiveness, creating consumer base, sustainability and cost reduction. These needs are interdependent and interrelated. The organisations today achieve these needs simultaneously. The market of Australia is economically developing which creates need for more educated human resources. The educational institutes of Australia provide high degree of secondary education and provide the industrial sector with educated graduates. These graduates are competent to lead the Australian companies towards higher degree of achievement of the business needs. References: 6202.0 - Labour Force, Australia, Jul 2017. (2017). Abs.gov.au. The Male Dominance of Women in Madame Bovary and Midaq Alley Essay Example For Students

The Male Dominance of Women in Madame Bovary and Midaq Alley Essay In the twentieth century, the world was beginning to change. New ideas were being expressed, new opportunities were being presented, and the balance of power between males and females was starting to evolve. The role of women began its path of change in the early 1900s, gaining momentum as the century unfolded. Early on, it was a slow process, and men still held most of the power in society. In the novels Madame Bovary, written by Gustave Flaubert, and Midaq Alley, written by Naguib Mahfouz, a common theme is expressed through Emma and Hamida. Both women undergo the stresses of marriage, feel the pressures their societies place on women, and fall prey to the confusing difference between love and lust. In both of these novels, neither of the characters is able to truly escape from her internal struggles because of societys acceptance of mens power over women. Emma grew up on a farm and at the age of thirteen, boarded at a convent. There she was exposed to many books and novels that sparked her passion for romantic ideals. She married a man name Charles and soon found herself very opposed to the ideas and roles of marriage. She asked herself, Why-why-did I every marry? (Flaubert 50) It is interesting that Emma believes so strongly in romantic ideas but gives up so quickly on her marriage to Charles. It is not but months after the marriage that she begins daydreaming of what her life could have been like with a different man: She wondered whether some different set of circumstances might not have resulted in her meeting some different man; and she tried to picture those imaginary circumstances, the life they would have brought her, the unknown other husband. However she imagined him, he wasnt a bit like Charles. (Flaubert 50) Throughout the entire novel, Emma feels such disgust and hatred towards Charles that in order to escape from her feelings of resentment, she relies on her affairs with other men to support her romantic desires and give her a greater sense of freedom. After all, With me, Emma said, it was after I was married that the began (Flaubert 124). In Midaq Alley, Hamida never actually gets married, but through her engagement with Abbas and her connection with Ibrahim Faraj, she too feels the constraints of what marriage would be like. One day she recalled how miserable she had been the first time when Ibrahim Faraj said he did not want to marry her. She had asked herself if she really wanted to marry him. The answer, in the negative, had come immediately. Marriage would have confined her to the home, exhausting her with the duties of a wife, housekeeper, and mother; all those tasks she knew she was not created for. She now saw how farsighted he had been. (Mahfouz 255) Although she was never married, she was already experiencing the confinement and constraints of commitment, as she was tortured by a sense of imprisonment and humiliation (Mahfouz 257). Hamida no longer felt like a free woman. The relationship that she thought would end well actually ended terribly wrong. Ibrahim Faraj brought her despair and sadness and Abbas, whom she loved, died trying to protect her. From both novels, the reader can see the affects male dominance can have in a relationship. When the male has more power, the womans sense of freedom diminishes, making the relationship stressful and demeaning. When Emma is pregnant, she wishes for a boy: .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc , .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .postImageUrl , .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc , .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:hover , .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:visited , .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:active { border:0!important; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:active , .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4681dac80feebbb37fb286321d22d8dc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Beatrice and Benedick Relationship AnalysisHe would be strong and dark this idea of having a male child was like a promise of compensation for all her past frustrations. A man is free, at least free to range the passions and the world, to surmount obstacles, to taste the rarest pleasures. Whereas a woman is continually thwarted. Inert, complaint, she has to struggle against her physical weakness and legal subjection. (Flaubert 101) What Emma says here sums up exactly how she feels: men are free and women are not. She wishes only to have a boy so as to not subject a girl to the same struggles she experiences that of feeling continually thwarted. The irony of this situation is that she does give birth to a girl who eventually loses all of her freedoms. In Midaq Alley, the womens responsibilities are to focus on two things: their physical appearance and finding an appropriate man to marry. Such shallow criteria are not sufficient to find a compatible husband. When Hamida finally accepts Abbass invitation for marriage, he agrees to work for the British army in order to earn enough money to provide her the finer things in life. When Abbas leaves, Hamida finds Ibrahim Faraj, who enchants her with his riches and opportunities. The last night she is at her house: Her mind set to work, imagining her future food and how she would dress and adorn herself, her face beaming at the delightful dreamy thoughts the shoddy appearance of her underwear embarrassed her and her bronze face turned red Hamida made up her mind not to give herself to him until she had exchanged these shabby clothes for pretty new ones. This idea appealed to her, and all of a sudden she was filled with joy and passion. (Mahfouz 203) Male dominance of women sets certain restrictions, leaving women trapped and unable to break out of the clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s of society. These subservient roles are the main conflict in the stories of both Emma and Hamida. The power of love and lust is a very important theme in Madame Bovary. Rodolphe eloquently describes love: Yes, it comes along one day, all of a sudden, just when weve given up hope. Then new horizons open before us: its like a voice crying, Look! Its here! We feel the need to pour out our hearts to a given person, to surrender, to sacrifice everything. In such a meeting no words are necessary: each senses the others thoughts. Each is the answer to the others dreams. There it is, the treasure so long sought for-there before us. (Flaubert 162) Here, love seems like a magical, wonderful thing. But is it really love that Emma experiences in this novel? When Emma and Là ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½on meet again, he he must make up his mind to possess her (Flaubert 264). From this quote, the reader can conclude that love was no longer the pervasive feeling here. Describing Emma as a possession makes her seem more like an object than a person capable of expressing and receiving feelings. The same happens in Midaq Alley with Ibrahim and Hamida: himself had never known love whenever a new girl fell into his net, he played the part of the ardent lover-until she succumbed; after that he continued to court her for a short time. From then on he had made sure of his influence by making her dependent upon him emotionally and financiallywhen his mission was accomplished he dropped his role of lover for that of the flesh merchant. (Flaubert 256). As depicted in this quote, the reader is shown that men of this time period often confused lust for love. Women in the 20th century went through difficult times trying to evolve the roles they had been given. Both Emma and Hamida experienced many difficulties. From both books, the reader can see evidence to support the stresses marriage entails, the hardships of the womans role, and the twisted minds of some men when it comes to love vs. lust. Neither Emma nor Hamida was able to physically escape from these torments, but their resolve to change their circumstances sowed the seeds of change for a new way to a life in the future.

8 Ways to Tell If a Website Is Reliable

8 Ways to Tell If a Website Is Reliable For every reputable website, there are dozens chock full of information thats inaccurate, unreliable or just plain nutty. For the unwary, inexperienced journalist  or researcher, such sites can present a minefield of possible problems. With that in mind, here are eight ways to tell if a website is reliable. 1. Look for Sites from Established Institutions The internet is full of websites that were started five minutes ago. What you want are sites associated with trusted institutions that have been around for awhile and have a proven track record of reliability and integrity. Such sites may include those run by government agencies, non-profit organizations,  foundations, or colleges and universities. 2. Look for Sites with Expertise You wouldnt go to an auto mechanic if you broke your leg, and you wouldnt go to the hospital to have your car repaired. Im making an obvious point: Look for websites that specialize in the kind of information youre seeking. So if youre writing a story on a flu outbreak, check out medical websites, such as the Centers for Disease Control, and so on. 3. Steer Clear of Commercial Sites Sites run by companies and business - their websites usually end in .com - are more often than not trying to sell you something. And if theyre trying to sell you something, chances are whatever information theyre presenting will be tilted in favor of their product. Thats not to say corporate sites should be excluded entirely. But be wary. 4. Beware of Bias Reporters write a lot about politics, and there are plenty of political websites out there. But many of them are run by groups that have a bias in favor of one political party or philosophy. A conservative website isnt likely to report objectively on a liberal politician, and vice versa. Steer clear of sites with a political ax to grind and instead look for ones that are non-partisan. 5. Check the Date As a reporter you need  the most up-to-date information available, so if a website seems old, its probably best to steer clear. One way to check - look for a last updated date on the page or site. 6. Consider  the Sites Look If a site looks poorly designed and amateurish, chances are it was created by amateurs. Steer clear. But be careful - just because a website is professionally designed doesnt mean its reliable. 7. Avoid Anonymous Authors Articles or studies whose authors are named are often - though not always - more reliable than works produced anonymously. It makes sense: If someone is willing to put their name on something theyve written, chances are they stand by the information it contains. And if you have the name of the author, you can always Google them to check their credentials. 8. Check the Links Reputable websites often link to each other. You can find out which other websites link to the site youre researching by conducting a link-specific Google search. Enter the following text into the Google search field, replacing [WEBSITE] with the domain of the site youre researching: link:[WEBSITE].com The search results will show you which websites link to the one youre researching. If lots of sites are linking to your site, and those sites seem reputable, then thats a good sign.
